LA BESTIA DORMIDA
Durante tres años el gorrión
ha venido por la tarde
para dormir bajo el tejado del porche.
¿Qué tiene esto que ver
con la guerra en Europa? Durante
tres años en invierno
y en verano el mismo gorrión
con la cabeza cubierta
dormido entre las sombras grises.

¡Hay un pájaro en la alameda!
¡Es el sol!
Las hojas son pequeños peces amarillos
nadando en el río.
El pájaro vuela por encima de ellas,
el día está en sus alas.
¡Febo!
¡Es él quien produce
el enorme resplandor entre los álamos!
Es su canto
el que eclipsa el sonido
de las hojas que chocan con el viento.

For three years at evening
the sparrow has come
under the porch roof to sleep.
What has this to do
with the war in Europe? For
three years winter
and summer the same sparrow
with covered head
asleep among the gray shadows

There is a bird in the poplars!
It is the sun!
The leaves are little yellow fish
swimming in the river.
The bird skims above them,
day is on his wings.
Phœbus!
It is he that is making
the great gleam among the poplars!
It is his singing
outshines the noise
of leaves clashing in the wind.
