Nací

un día de marzo de 1932

Karceviskiai era el pueblo

 

durante el parto

mi abuela ayudó

a mi madre

 

mientras las mujeres

se ocupaban de mí

la nieve caía sobre el pueblo

 

cuando mi abuela

por fin me envolvió

con un paño

dio gracias a Dios

 

mi madre dormía

respirando suavemente

sepultada por la nieve

donde los caminos

y el sol bajaban la mirada

sin calidez alguna

hacia mi abuela

y hacia mí

in cloth

she thanked God

my sleeping mother

was breathing softly

covered deeply with snow

were the paths

and the sun looked down

without warmth

on my grandmother

and on me
