PERDIDO Y ENCONTRADO

 

          El hombre ha perdido sus dioses.

          Si pierde su dignidad

          Todo ha terminado.

 

Yo dije eso.

 

¿Qué quise decir?

Primero, que la creencia

en la divinidad casi ha

desaparecido.

 

Por "dignidad"

me refiero a la mutua

autoestima, la idea

de que tenemos algún derecho

a estar aquí y que ello

tiene un valor.

(Valores es allí donde

fueron los dioses

cuando murieron.)

 

Mi perra Susie no parece

tener ningún valor, pero

nos tiene a Pat y a mí, dioses

que ha conseguido para jugar

y a los que ladrar.

LOST AND FOUND

 

          Man has lost his gods.

          If he loses his dignity,

          it's all over.

 

I said that.

 

What did I mean?

First, that the belief

in divinity has almost

disappeared.

 

By dignity

I meant mutual

self-respect, the sense

that we have some right

to be here and that

there is value in it.

(Values are where

the gods went

when they died.)

 

My dog Susie doesn’t seem

to have any values, but she does

have Pat and me, gods

she gets to play with and bark at.
