ESTUDIO PARA UNA ANUNCIACIÓN
Meditando, María piensa que incluso en el pecaminoso quattrocento
sus pensamientos están libres de pecado.
como si el ángel de la anunciación cruzase a nado el cielo
azul. Esta ala tan generosamente estrafalaria, podría ser
la brillante quilla de una barca dorada guiada con cuidado
hacia la costa, para allí transformarse en una
cosa anfibia, cuyas palabras ella oía
como si hubiesen ascendido a través de millas de agua, distantes
y resueltas en sílabas cual burbujas de un submarinista,
que sólo decían lo que ella ya sabía,
que hasta la vida perfecta comienza abajo,
no en las alturas, en el flujo, la corriente
brumosa que la ha atrapado en su resaca.

STUDY FOR AN ANNUNCIATION
Mary in thought, though her thoughts are free of sin
even in the sinful quattrocento.
An angel's wing as wide and flat as a fin,
as if the announcing angel swam through blue
sky. This wing so richly outlandish, it could be
the glittering keel of a golden boat steered carefully
to shore, where it transformed itself into
something amphibian, whose words she heard
as if they had risen through miles of water, distant
and parsed into syllables like scuba bubbles
and saying merely what she alread knew,
that even the perfect life begins below
and no on hig, within the flux, the dreamy
flow that had caught her in its undertow.
