En la profundidad de la noche

«¿Cómo no ser?», te preguntas y hasta acabas por decirlo
en voz alta…
Pero el árbol y la piedra lo callan,
aunque ambos son hijos de la palabra y por tanto mudos,
ya que la palabra se asusta de ver lo que ha sido de ella…
Pero los nombres aún los tienen. Los nombres: pino,
arce, álamo temblón. ..y los nombres: feldespato,
basalto, fonolita, amor… Bellos nombres,
sólo que asustados de ver en qué se han convertido.

Deep in the Night

‘How not to be!’ you ask yourself and in the end say it
aloud…
But tree and stone are silent
though each is born of the word and therefore dumb
since the word is afraid of what it has become.
But names they still have. Names: pine,
maple, aspen…. And names: feldspar,
basalt, phonolite, love. Beautiful names,
afraid only of what they have become.
