EL DÍA QUE LADY* MURIÓ

 

Son las 12:20 en Nueva York, un viernes

tres días después del día de la Bastilla,** sí

es el año 1959 y voy a buscar un limpiabotas

porque me apearé del de las 4:19 en Easthampton

a las 7:15 y después iré directamente a cenar

y no conozco a la gente que me dará de comer

 

Subo por la calle calurosa que empieza a solearse

y tomo una hamburguesa y una leche malteada y compro

un horrible ejemplar de NEW WORLD WRITING para saber

qué están haciendo los poetas de Ghana.

Voy al banco

y la señorita Stillwagon (de nombre Linda, según oí en una ocasión)

por una vez en su vida no consulta mi saldo

y en la GOLDEN GRIFFIN consigo para Patsy

un pequeño libro de Verlaine con dibujos de Bonnard aunque

pienso en Hesíodo, trad. por Richard Lattimore, o

en la nueva obra de teatro de Brendan Behan o en "Le Balcon" o "Les Nègres"

de Genet, pero no, me quedo con Verlaine

después de que el terrible dilema prácticamente me adormeciera

 

y sólo por Mike echo un vistazo en la licorería

de PARK LANE y pido una botella de Strega

y después regreso por donde he venido a la Sexta Avenida

y el estanco del teatro Zigfried y

con aire de despreocupación pido un cartón de Gauloise y un cartón

de Picayune y un NEW YORK POST con el rostro de ella

 

y ahora estoy sudando mucho y me recuerdo

apoyado contra la puerta del lavabo en el 5 SPOT***

mientras ella susurraba a Mal Waldron****

una canción junto al teclado y todos y yo conteníamos el aliento.

* Frank O'Hara se refiere a Billie Holiday, a quien Lester Young puso el apodo de Lady Day. Por otra parte, el Lady Day (literalmente "día de la señora") es, para el cristianismo, el Día de la Anunciación.

** Referencia al 14 de julio, cuando se conmemora la toma de la Bastilla. Billie Holiday murió el 17 de julio de 1959.

*** El Five Spot Café fue un famoso club de jazz neoyorquino que funcionó entre 1956 y 1967. Billie Holiday actuó numerosas veces en él.

**** Pianista que desde 1957 acompañó regularmente a Billie Holiday, a quien dedicó tributos como los discos "Left Alone" o "Blues for Lady Day".

 

 

 

THE DAY LADY DIED

 

It is 12:20 in New York a Friday

three days after Bastille day, yes

it is 1959 and I go get a shoeshine

because I will get off the 4:19 in Easthampton

at 7:15 and then go straight to dinner

 

and I don’t know the people who will feed me

I walk up the muggy street beginning to sun

and have a hamburger and a malted and buy

an ugly NEW WORLD WRITING to see what the poets

in Ghana are doing these days

I go on to the bank

and Miss Stillwagon (first name Linda I once heard)

doesn’t even look up my balance for once in her life

and in the GOLDEN GRIFFIN I get a little Verlaine

for Patsy with drawings by Bonnard although I do

think of Hesiod, trans. Richmond Lattimore or

Brendan Behan’s new play or Le Balcon or Les Nègres

of Genet, but 1 don’t, I stick with Verlaine

after practically going to sleep with quandariness

 

and for Mike I just stroll into the PARK LANE

Liquor Store and ask for a bottle of Strega and

then I go back where I came from to 6th Avenue

and the tobacconist in the Ziegfeld Theatre and

casually ask for a carton of Gauloises and a carton

of Picayunes, and a NEW YORK POST with her face on it

 

and I am sweating a lot by now and thinking of

leaning on the john door in the 5 SPOT

while she whispered a song along the keyboard

to Mal Waldron and everyone and I stopped breathing
