HOMBRES ORGANIZADOS EN UNA SOCIEDAD OPULENTA
Anochece, mi esposa
y las niñas están preparando la cena
en la cocina. Apago
la lámpara de lectura y descanso la vista.
Al otro lado de la ventana la nieve
se ha vuelto de un azul profundo. "Antonio
y Cleopatra" después de un día agotador. Pienso
en ese hombre y esa mujer
en esos vigorosos raquíticos quitándose
la ropa de encaje y terciopelo
y oro y brocado y metiéndose
desnudos en la cama juntos
piojos en sus apestosas axilas
perfumadas, la cama llena de chinches.

It is deep twilight, my wife
And girls are fixing supper
In the kitchen. I turn out
The reading lamp and rest my eyes.
Outside the window the snow
Has turned deep blue. Anthony
and Cleopatra after a trying day. I think of
Those vigorous rachitic
Men and women taking off
Their clothes of lace and velvet
And gold brocade and climbing
Naked into bed together
Lice in their stinking perfumed
Armpits, the bed full of bugs.
