VARIOS REPROCHES AL PRIMER AMOR

 

Es como la historia de la poesía polaca.

En la antología que empieza con

Milosz, Szymborska, Rozewicz y Herbert

nadie más tiene ocasión de decir nada memorable:

excesivo evolucionismo,

breve posmodernismo,

insignificante sentimentalismo.

Y entonces

cómo explicar a tus hijos

que no son hijos de tu gran amor,

que no llevan en sí los genes de la gratitud.

Cómo admitir

que has perdido tu vida en un intento de olvidar

porque el amor ha sido tan íntimo y coincidente con el tuyo

que has necesitado un idioma distinto para evitar hablar de él.

It’s like the story of Polish poetry.

In the anthology starting with

Milosz, Szymborska, Różewicz and Herbert

nobody else has a chance to say anything memorable:

excessive evolutionism,

brief postmodernism,

petty sentimentality.

And then

how to explain to your children

that they are not children of your great love,

that they do not carry the genes of gratitude.

How to admit

that you’ve missed your life in an attempt to forget

because love had been so close and coincident with you,

that you’ve needed a different tongue to keep from talking about it.
